모노클에는 가져다 붙일 명분이 너무나도 많았다. 첫째, 잡지 구독을 하고 싶었다. 잡지에 대한 나의 사랑은 특급 사랑이다. 둘째, 새해에는 영어를 익혀보고자 알파벳으로 쓰인 문서라면 막무가내로 읽겠다는 다짐을 한 참이었다. 셋째로 어엿한 세계인으로서 보다 글로벌한 안목을 갖고 싶었다. 넷째(도 필요하다면), 할인은 못해줄 망정 정기구독자에게 돈을 더 받아내겠다고 가격을 올려잡는 잡지에 어찌 호기심이 생기지 않을쏜가!
그리하여 정기구독을 신청했다. 결제 직후에는 왠지 아차 싶은 기분이 들기도 했지만 6주가 흘러 실제로 잡지를 받아볼 즈음에 남은 건 오로지 설렘뿐, 지출의 상처는 이미 아물기 시작한 터였다. 그림 위주로 대강 훑어보니 정말로 온세상 소식이 (영어로) 브리핑되어 있다. 이러니저러니 해도 역시 한국인인지라 나는 north와 south를 막론하고 Korea 소식부터 찾아보았더니-
